How to Print with Anything: A Relief-Printing Workshop

Join Articulate Ink instructors this fall for an introduction to relief printing. During this four-week course participants will work with traditional and experimental materials to create a final project that incorporates multiple techniques. We will explore printing with lino-blocks, soft rubber, cork, textural objects, and recycled materials. This course is ideal for beginner and intermediate printmakers over the age of 18.

Class Schedule

Please remember to double check that you are able to attend both sessions as there are no opportunities to reschedule missed sessions. We encourage you to attend all sessions in the workshop in order to get the most out of your experience.

 

Class 1 [Wednesday, October 17, 2018 6:30pm-9:00pm]: Studio Orientation and Relief Printing Basics

·       Course overview and studio / tool safety

·       Examination of prints created with relief-based techniques

·       Hands-on demonstrations and experimentation with foam impression blocks, potatoes, and cork board

Class 2 [Wednesday October 24, 2018 6:30pm-9:00pm]: Image Development and Block Carving

·       Hands-on demonstrations of block carving

·       Students develop images for relief printing and begin carving their blocks

Class 3 [Monday, October 29, 2018 6:30pm-9:00pm]: Printing with Carved Blocks

·       Hands-on demonstration on printing blocks

·       Students complete carving and test print their blocks

·       Discussion of materials to bring for experimentation at the following class

Class 4 [Wednesday November 7, 2018 6:30pm-9:00pm]: Experimentation and Non-Traditional Materials

·       Hands-on demonstration printing with non-traditional materials (vinyl records, fabrics, organic materials, etc.)

·       Discussion of plans for final project

·       Printing schedule for final class determined

Class 5 [Saturday, November 10, 2018 12:00pm-5:00pm]: Printing of Final Projects

·       Students print a composition developed using any combination of the techniques explored in the previous classes

·       Each student is allotted one hour of printing time on the final day to create an edition of 5 prints

 

Class Fees

Enrollment and tools: $245*

Enrollment fee only: $205

*Included in the $245 enrollment fee is your very own set of block-cutting tools, a brayer, and a baren to keep – all the tools you would need to continue printing at home after the class has ended. If you only want to use these tools during the class, chose the $205 enrollment fee when registering.
